CONDITIONS
BARRIER FUNCTION
EXAMPLE
WHAT IS IT:
The skin surface acts as a semi-permeable barrier between your body and the outside world and is, in a sense, similar to a brick wall. Correctly functioning “bricks” and “cement” are essential for healthy skin. When defects occur in either then the protective functions of the skin are impaired and we describe this as an Impaired Barrier Function.
Barrier function is an essential factor in skin health and ageing. When it is impaired the skin is left vulnerable to the penetration of pollution, loss of moisture, an increase in inflammation and reduced essential biological activity. It also looks rough, creased and lifeless.
A strong barrier function can reduce inflammation in the skin and potentially in the body, help various skin functions and can create a smooth, radiant skin surface.
Accurately identifying the cause of the impairment is essential in order to devise the best treatment approach.
